Celebrating 10 years of costume exhibitions at Guildford House Gallery, Marion May returned with fascinating garments from her renowned collection.
Showing a series of black and white dresses from 1870 to 1950, this exhibition depicted the changing silhouette of dresses from a trained white muslin of the 1870s to the s-bend outline of a black beaded evening dress of the Edwardian days. A black and white tunic dress and a black net dance dress that were worn during World War I were displayed, as well as a mid-20s black satin party dress with a short handkerchief hemline. The 1930s were represented by a pleated white tennis dress and a patterned black and white dress shows the 'New Look' of the late 1940s.
