The Surrey Photographic Association (SPA) returned to Guildford House Gallery with its biennial exhibition of photographic prints and slides with the best work from 55 camera clubs in Surrey, West Sussex and Northeast Hampshire.

The SPA is the umbrella organisation for clubs in the region, providing many services and activities to those clubs, including the organisation of this biennial exhibition.  The SPA is one of 15 federations throughout the UK who are members of The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB).  This exhibition is supported by the PAGB through its patronage scheme and PAGB medals and ribbons will be awarded.

Over the past few years photography has been experiencing a resurge of interest, fuelled by the digital revolution, which has given many people access to processes that until now were the domain of only the most enthusiastic photographer.  Printing in particular, has become a viable activity for those who previously found the requirements of 'wet' darkrooms too onerous or impractical.  The result has been that many of the region’s clubs have seen increases in membership, which in turn has led to higher standards and increased competitiveness in this exhibition and other club and inter-club competitions.

However, photographic clubs are not just about competition.  Each of the SPA’s member clubs has a varied programme of events, which as well as competitions, include visiting speakers and workshops, all aimed at promoting the art of photography in all its forms.  The clubs encourage beginners and advanced photographers alike, whether using digital processes or more traditional film.  For details of your nearest camera club, contact the Secretary of the SPA.

All images on view will be the result of a rigorous selection process performed by three highly respected selectors from outside the region, they are, Sandy Cleland FRPS, AFIAP of the Scottish Federation and from East Anglia, Ron Tear ARPS, MPAGB, BPE*3, PSA2* and Ann Miles FRPS, AFIAP, MPAGB.
