Key Stage 1 & 2 Art & Design

A visit to Guildford House Gallery would be particularly relevant when studying
Unit 9gen: Visiting a museum, gallery or site
The visit would provide a structure for this unit and support observation and learning, looking at why are we visiting the gallery. The students compare the gallery with other places where they might have seen art i.e. shops, churches, other museums. Discussion takes place of what is collected and displayed by museums and galleries and what isn’t, who or what decides that an object is valuable. We also discuss the importance of looking at real objects and the role of museums and galleries in this work. The visits also include learning about what is expected of visitors to museums and respect for other people’s needs in public places. The children will learn to compare ideas and methods and approaches in others’ work and to say what they think and feel about them. The students will also be encouraged to adapt their work according to their views and describe how they might develop further.
Visits include the opportunity to:
-
Record from firsthand observation, including sketchbooks
-
Look at the materials and processes used and how they have been matched to ideas and intentions
-
Look at role and purposes of the artists working in different times
-
Investigate artists’ styles (compare with other artists’ works)
-
Learn about the difference between reproductions and originals
Unit 2C: Can buildings speak?
The children are able to explore the shape and pattern in local buildings. Guildford House Gallery is a Grade I Listed Building and ideal for this unit. Importantly there are large varieties of shapes, spaces and patterns to be found in the building that can be used as a basis for rubbings and prints. There will be an exploration of how these features tell us something about the purpose of the building and ideas to inspire follow-on work in the classroom as a result of their visit.
Visits include the opportunity to:
-
Record from firsthand observation, including sketchbooks
-
Produce rubbings based on different surfaces e.g. brickwork, wood grain etc.
-
Identify different shapes and patterns in the building
-
Look at the materials and processes used and how they have been matched to ideas and intentions.
-
Learn about the difference between reproductions and originals
