Green Flag

What is a Green Flag Award?

The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales and recognises the best green spaces in the country.

Winning a Green Flag Award informs the public that a site flying a Green Flag is a high quality green space.  Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status.

At a Green Flag Award winning site you can expect a high standard of maintenance, health & safety, cleanliness, variety of facilities and community involvement, all of which are true of Sutherland Memorial Park.

Green Flag

Double success for Guildford in national park awards

Stoke Park and Sutherland Memorial Park have been named as two of the best parks in England and Wales by the Civic Trust's coveted Green Flag awards 2007/2008. This is the first time Stoke Park has been awarded a Green Flag, and the fourth success for Sutherland Memorial Park. The Green Flag award scheme is the national standard for parks and open spaces. Winners of a green flag must be welcoming, safe and well-maintained with involvement from the local community. Stoke Park, located on London Road, covers 150 acres. It is home to the Surrey County Agricultural Show, Guilfest and other events throughout the year. It also contains Stoke Park Gardens, which features a sensory garden, putting green, children's play area and paddling pool. The park is also home to the Georgian, timber framed Burchatts Farm Barn, which is a popular function venue.
Sutherland Memorial Park

Sutherland Memorial Park first won a Green Flag Award in 2004 and has maintained the standard since.

The Park is extremely popular with the residents of Guildford due to the large variety of facilities available to all ages. The Park was donated to the Council by the Duke of Sutherland in 1954 and still retains its original character and neat formal appearance. It has a range of both formal and informal plantings, seasonal bedding and a wild flower area.

Sutherland Memorial Park is an excellent example of a community park, both through its formal management arrangements and by the interest and involvement shown by the community. The current balance of formal and informal recreation is generally considered to be right, and the emphasis for future improvements will be to maintain the current quality of all facilities, while providing for some more new and challenging play and youth facilities.

Children facilities

The playground caters for an age range of 4-8 year olds and has been designated as a premier equipped area for play.

Youth facilities

The Park is extensively used by local young people and has an identifiable ‘youth’ space, with facilities that include a teen shelter, basketball post, ball court and trim trail.

Sports facilities

There is an excellent range of facilities within the park including:

  • Cricket pitch (with two practice nets)
  • 2 football 11-a-side pitches
  • 2 football junior 7-a-side pitches
  • Petanque court
  • Floodlit Astroturf pitch (three tennis courts or three 5-a-side football pitches)
  • Lawn bowls

Stoke Park

Stoke Park is Guildford’s most popular and well-known green space. It has a vast array of facilities that are used by and accessible to all age groups and abilities.
