Chilworth Mills


Scheduled Ancient Monument, 11 hectares in size, located 6 miles south east of Guildford designated Area of High Ecological Value. Predominantly wet woodland growing around remnants of the 17th Century gunpowder mills.

Access/furniture
Public footpath from west to south, informal footpaths from east to west. North Downs Way borders site to the north-east. Disabled and pushchair access along main footpath. No car parking. Signs on east and west entrances with map and some historic background (in need of replacement). No dog bins. Picnic seating in centre of site.

Habitat
Wet woodland, predominantly alder occasional ash, poplar, sycamore and cherry standards with occasional hazel coppice understorey. The Tillingbourne runs along the northern boundary, the original gunpowder mills waterway runs along the southern boundary.

Management
Footpaths and picnic area cut regularly, tree work reactive. English Heritage funded work has been carried out to restore some structures.
