Merrow Down


A Registered Common situated two miles to the east of the town centre. Open grassland, mixed broadleaf woodland, predominantly oak and hazel coppice; The downs is an area of historic interest covering some 157 hectares, which includes Guildford Golf Club and has fantastic views to the north and east.

Access/furniture
Public footpaths and tracks dissect the site throughout. Disabled and pushchair access along main tracks. Car parking accessed via Down Road. No formal signage. Dog bins. Occasional seating. Dog walkers frequent the area but generally keep away from the un-fenced dog-free area near the car park.

Habitat
Mixed broadleaf woodland, Chalk Downland, scrub, unimproved pasture and ponds. Good site for pyramidal orchids and associated wildflowers.

Management
Footpaths cut regularly, grassland mown annually with grass collected to promote ground flora. Tree work reactive.
