An 80-hectare nature reserve to the north-east of the town centre straddling the A3 from Burpham to Ladymead. The reserve contains a mosaic of different riverside habitats that support a variety of wildlife and is popular with birdwatchers, walkers and naturalists. This site was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 2000.
Access/furniture
A way marked trail has been constructed which includes sections of boardwalks going across wetland and through marshes, much of which has access for wheelchairs. A large car park can be found off Bowers Lane. Occasional seating and formal interpretation boards can be found in the reserve and a leaflet with information on the reserve and description of the circular trail is available.
Habitat
Mixed broadleaf woodland, lake, riverside, wetland, reed beds, scrub, meadow and ponds. Good site for birdwatching with a ‘sighting’ board situated next to the lake.
Management
Footpaths are cut regularly, meadowland mown annually with grass collected to promote ground flora. Tree work reactive. Work is carried out in consultation with the British Ornithological Trust and the local Bird Club.
