Juliette Pochin mezzo-soprano

James Morgan conductor
The Guildford Philharmonic and Guildford Choral Society come together for the sixth year of their highly successful collaborations. 'The Music Makers' is based on a poem by Arthur O'Shaunessey, which Elgar felt a strong affinity with, identifying himself with the 'dreamer of dreams' in the first line of the poem. Throughout the piece Elgar recalls his career through a series of quotations from his earlier works (Sea Pictures, The Dream of Gerontius, The Enigma Variations and both symphonies).
Elgar wrote his cello concerto seven years later in 1919 after The Great War, his lament for a lost world.
