Objectives of FISH

The main objectives of the FISH project are to:

  1. Reduce crime by providing alternatives to anti-social activities.
  2. Tackle social inclusion by providing places for young people with disabilities, from the deprived wards of Guildford and referrals from agencies such as, the police, children’s services, the youth offending team and Guildford Pupil Referral Unit.
  3. Support the anti poverty agenda by offering assisted places for families on income support, council tax or housing benefit.
  4. Work with partners such as, Disability Challengers, the Police Youth Liaison Officer, Community Safety and the youth offending team.

The scheme helps young people to manage risk and supports them in developing personal and social relationships, to enable them to learn for life. It encourages them to live healthier lifestyles and promotes further participation of young people in a wide variety of activities.

The young people book on for a week at a time and choose up to three activities per day. The project is heavily subsidised by the council costing on average £26.00 per young person per day. This keeps the project low cost to families, high quality with a wide variety of activities, a high level of staff supervision and provides one to one support for young people with disabilities.
