Disability in sport

Until a new officer is appointed please contact Active Surrey (this page opens in another window) if you have any queries.

A Disability Sports Development Officer was in post, as part of the 'Breaking the Tape' Project. The appointment came about largely due to a lottery grant of £62,083 from Sport England's Active Communities Development Fund (ACDF).

Guildford were one of the key partners and support in the project along with Surrey County Council, English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), Surrey County Playing Fields Association, Spelthorne, Runnymede and Elmbridge Borough Council, providing the remaining £50,000 to finance the project.

A Disability Advisory Group was set up to help deliver the aims of the Sport Matters in Surrey Strategy. The 'Breaking the Tape' project will endeavour to increase both disabled and inclusive sporting opportunities across the county.

The post has previously supported the following projects in Guildford;

  • Supporting the Sport For All day with the recruitment and management of facilitators
  • Training of volunteers for the Sport For All Day
  • Working with Guildford City and Wey Valley Swim Club including the appointment of a part-time Community Swimming Coach for people with disability.
  • Partnership working with Disability Challengers
  • Disability Awareness courses for staff at Guildford Spectrum
  • Coaching for George Abbott students within the VI cricket programme
