Physical activity & health

Key Issues
Recognised by both Sport England and the Department for Culture, Music and Sport (this page opens in a new window) in ‘Game Plan: a strategy for delivering Government’s sport and physical activity objectives’, sport can play a major part in key issues including health, crime reduction and social inclusion.

Health
Through the Weight Management Group for West Surrey, Guildford is launching its healthy walk scheme, ‘A Walk in the Park’. The ‘A Walk in the Park’ will be a programme of free walks available to everyone. The group will use the walks to encourage various groups to participate in regular exercise, tackling the growing problem of heart disease and obesity.

The scheme will involve various partners including Guildford’s Parks & Countryside Department, University of Surrey, various Primary Care Trusts and Health Promotion Specialists. The University of Surrey will promote the healthy walks through its Community Volunteer Scheme, providing students to lead walks around Guildford’s countryside.

If you would like to get involved with this initiative or have any suggestions how the scheme can be organised please do not hesitate to contact the Sport and Physical Activity Officer on the contact details at the bottom of the page.
