Eagle Radio's PG supported Team Guildford!
Eagle radio - the station that loves Surrey and Hampshire - also celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2006. Breakfast DJ, PG, pledged his support for Team Guildford in April, and was pleased to hear the SYG's were such a success.

Congratulations and thanks to all those who competed, officiated or volunteered in the Surrey Youth Games 2006!

Tennis
The Mixed Tennis Years 6 & 7 team enjoyed a scorching hot day of competition at St Georges College, Weybridge. After a mass warm up lead by Sam Richardson from LTA Surrey, the teams completed a number of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) based exercises such as skipping, sprinting and reaction ball catches. These were designed to develop their agility, reactions, coordination and speed; all key skills for the keen tennis player. Team Guildford showed amazing skills and ended the morning in 3rd place.

After a well earned lunch, it was time for the real action. Matches were played both indoors and out, in girls doubles, boys doubles and mixed doubles. The level of tennis was of a very high standard and Team Guildford demonstrated great teamwork and sportsmanship, there was also some great shots!

After a nailbiting couple of matches in the play offs, it was all over and Team Guildford achieved a commendable 5th place.

Well done and thanks to the Mixed Tennis Years 6 & 7 team, your parents and the Tennis Team Manager.

  • Saturday and Sunday 24th and 25th June
Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boccia, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Netball, and Squash

After a cloudy start the main weekend also became hot and sunny. Events this weekend were based across two sites; the Varsity, University of Surrey Campus, and Guildford Spectrum.

Once again, Team Guildford displayed great skill in their chosen sports and proved that enthusiasm and determination can pay off!

Overall, Team Guildford placed in the top 3 on 6 occasions. The Mixed Badminton Years 7-9 won for the fourth year running, and the Girls Football Years 5 & 6 won after a nailbiting penalty shoot out. Other successes included:

  • Mixed Athletics Years 5 & 6 - 3rd
  • Girls Hockey Years 7, 8, 9 - 2nd
  • Netball Years 7 & 8 - 3rd
  • Netball Years 9 & 10 - 3rd

Whilst satisfying to achieve such positions, the real success is the children that attended the trials, continued to take part in the training sessions and those who were then chosen to represent Guildford borough. The Sports Development service is proud of the opportunities it has, and will continue, to open up for young people to take part in sport.

Guildford borough is proud of Team Guildford, and the skill, sportsmanship and teamwork displayed by all across the two weekends.

Well done and thanks to the teams, your parents and all team managers.

Other events and information were available at both sites to keep families and competitors amused during the day. This included Sport England and Sport Relief Mile stands, RFU, Mini Masters and Volleyball England taster areas and free ice skating and bowling shoe hire for those who wanted to cool off in Spectrum.
