Councillors from across the borough recently took part in a 'Take your councillor to school day' event to mark Local Democracy Week 2006.
The event involved 15 local councillors, who visited 250 students at five locations to talk informally about their role and to get involved with a typical student day. The aim was to help break down some of the barriers between young people and politicians and encourage interest in the democratic process.
Cllr Vas Kapsalis, Lead Councillor for Communications and Personnel, says:
"Local Democracy Week is a great way of getting young people interested in the democratic process and to help raise awareness of their important contribution. This event proved very popular and we hope to build on this contact and further develop our relationships with local schools and colleges in the future."
Students from Kings College, Ash Manor, the Royal Grammar School, George Abbot and Guildford College took part in the event.
To coincide with Local Democracy Week, the council also launched a new section of its website dedicated to the needs and interests of young people. The web pages provide information on what is going on in the local area, details of how politics directly affects young people, allows them to register their views and provides other relevant links and information.
