A Guildford resident must complete 100 hours of community service after pleading guilty to defrauding Guildford Borough Council of over £4,000 worth of housing and council tax benefit.
Michelle Hayward, formerly of Fentum Road, failed to tell the Council that she had additional employment while claiming the benefits. She was sentenced to the community punishment order and must also pay £75 costs following a hearing at Guildford Magistrates Court on Thursday 26 March.
Cllr Tony Rooth, Lead Councillor for Finance and Resources, says: "We understand that in the current difficult economic times, residents may seek additional employment. However, if you are claiming benefits, it is vital that you tell us of any change in your circumstances. The benefit system is there to help those residents most in need. We are committed to preventing and tackling benefit fraud and we will actively prosecute anyone found to be making a fraudulent claim."
