Essential conservation works to repair and protect an historic monument in Guildford are now underway.
Castle Arch, the Historic Grade II* Scheduled Ancient Monument at the junction of Quarry Street and Castle Hill in Guildford town centre was closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic access on 10 February to protect the public. The structure of the arch itself is sound but the surface is crumbling due to water and frost damage to the chalk.
A scaffold has been put around the arch with a specialist scaffold sheeting to protect the public from falling debris and also protect the arch from the weather while it dries. The drying process is dependent on ambient temperature and humidity, but is likely to take several months. The scaffolding will then provide the working platform to carry out the repairs needed.
Guildford Borough Council is assessing the best way of repairing and protecting the arch for the future. Castle Hill is closed to vehicles at the junction with Warwick's Bench apart from essential access to properties on Castle Hill while works take place.
Cllr Jenny Wicks, Lead Councillor for Environment says: "We have taken advice from English Heritage and the road will remain closed while conservation work is completed. This will allow us to secure the future of this historic monument and ensure that the Castle Arch is safely repaired before the road reopens."
The road is now open to pedestrians but will remain closed to vehicles while the scaffolding remains. For more information on the road closure and diversions in place please contact Surrey County Council Highways department on 0300 200 1003.
