Castle Hill temporary closure (press release)

Traffic and pedestrian access through Castle Arch, at the junction of Quarry Street and Castle Hill in Guildford town centre, has been closed until further notice in the interests of public safety.

This means Castle Hill  is closed at the junction with Warwick's Bench apart from essential access to properties on Castle Hill.

The arch is a grade II star, scheduled ancient monument.  The structure of the arch itself is sound but the surface is crumbling due to water and frost damage to the chalk.

Cllr Jenny Wicks, Lead Councillor for the Environment comments: "Guildford Borough Council, who owns the structure,  is working with English Heritage to seek a solution that will secure the arch and open the road as soon as is safe to do so.  We do not yet know how long the road will be closed as the work required needs to be assessed and agreed by English Heritage".
