To make way for development of a prestigious new 185 bedroom hotel in Guildford, a large section of the Civic car park will need to close temporarily from the evening of Saturday 13 June.
Sue Sturgeon, Strategic Director, says: "It is great news that this fantastic project is getting off the ground. Guildford needs more hotel accommodation in the town centre, and this new facility is set to provide a boost to the local economy. While the project is underway, we are highlighting the other car parking facilities available – many of which have spaces available even on Saturdays."
In Guildford there are over 5,000 public parking spaces in and around the town centre and hundreds more park and ride spaces serving the town.
Kevin McKee, Parking Manager, comments: "There are a wide range of alternatives available. Near the Civic, there are Castle (350 spaces), Bright Hill (121) and Upper High Street (49) car parks. York Road (605) is just a short walk via the pedestrian access route and usually has plenty of space. At weekends there are also Robin Hood (23) and St Josephs Church (71) car parks. The further from the centre you go, the cheaper the parking is and the more space is likely to be available - particularly at weekends. An excellent alternative is to use the park and ride system. Artington has over 700 spaces and at Merrow there are 335. With frequent buses into the town centre and reasonable return fares, park and ride is an increasingly popular option for people."
63 spaces plus three disabled spaces will remain. These spaces will be available until the construction of the neighbouring new Civic starts in the near future.
Most of the spaces will be reinstated once the hotel and Civic projects are finished when 220 public spaces will be available. Hotel developer RMH (Guildford) LLP has indicated that the project will take about two years to complete.
