Following the tragic death of a baby in Somerset who died from being scalded by water from a hot water tank with a faulty thermostat, Guildford Borough Council has urged homeowners, landlords and tenants to look out for telltale warning signs with their hot water system.
Councillor Andrew French, Lead Cllr for Housing comments: "In light of this rare but tragic incident we would ask all residents to look out for these warning signs and be aware who to contact should they spot any of these."
The signs people should look out for are:
-
Excessively hot water coming out of the hot water taps
-
Excessive noise or ‘bubbling’ from the hot water cylinder
-
Hot water coming out of certain cold water taps (some storage cisterns also feed cold water taps in the bathroom)
-
Steam/moisture in the roof space.
-
If you spot any of these problems, turn off the immersion heater system and consult a qualified plumber for advice on further action.
The council's Neighbourhood and Housing Management team have an on-going programme to update heating and hot water systems in council properties. Repair and servicing contractors have been asked to pay particular attention to hot water systems. Council tenants who spot any of the warning signs are asked to contact the Repairs Team on 01483 444222 immediately.
