On 1 April the new Gas Safe Register will replace the CORGI registration scheme as the gas safety authority for Great Britain. Guildford Borough Council is advising residents to make sure they check engineers are registered with the new scheme before any gas work is carried out at their homes.
Cllr Andrew French, Lead Councillor for Housing says: "We want to make sure all our residents are aware of the new Gas Safe Register which starts on 1 April. Taking a few moments to choose a registered engineer will mean that you can be sure that works will be carried out safely and to the highest standard. It's easy to find a registered engineer in the borough by visiting the website, www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk (this page opens in a new window)."
Both of the heating contractors who carry out repairs and safety checks on the Council's housing stock will be registered with the new scheme. From 1 April engineers will carry an ID card with a unique number and the new black and yellow Gas Safe logo.
The Gas Safe Register is designed to protect consumers as it means that by law only Gas Safe registered engineers should be employed to carry out work on gas appliances or installation. It will be overseen by the Health and Safety Executive.
