Sport for All is a winner (press release)

20 October 2008

Inspired by the success of Britain’s Olympians and Paralympians in Beijing, there were winners all round at Sport for All day at Guildford Spectrum recently. This special event in the sporting calendar had thousands of local people joining in the fun - with people of all ages and abilities trying everything from scuba diving to bowling.

Explains Lead Councillor for Healthy Living, Cllr Terence Patrick: “The day aims to make sport accessible for everyone especially people with disabilities and under-represented groups. Everyone is encouraged to have a go at a variety of different activities and sports including trampolining, ice-skating, basketball, scuba diving, bowling and cricket. Our thanks go to everyone involved - those that came to take part, the organisers and the staff at Spectrum.”

Organised by Guildford Borough Council and Sport Guildford, this positive celebration of sport gives the community the opportunity to try something new. It also raises the profile of local sporting groups and facilities in the borough.

Adds one of the Sport for All organisers, Tony Gorham: “It was good to see so many families taking part in what has become such an important date in the Guildford sporting calendar. The enthusiasm and skills of the volunteers, coaches and participants culminated in an active, fun day offering sporting opportunities for all - regardless of disability, ability or age. Thanks also to Guildford Heat, Guildford BSAC, the University of Surrey, the volunteers from George Abbot School and Guildford’s sports clubs”.
