Two Guildford residents were fined after pleading guilty to defrauding Guildford Borough Council of more than £1,800 worth of housing and council tax benefit.
Caroline Paterson and Jayson Meadows of East Horsley appeared at Guildford Magistrates Court on Thursday (25 June). The couple failed to inform the Council that Mr Meadows had started work when claiming the benefits.
They were fined £100 each, plus £50 costs and £15 victims surcharge each. They are currently repaying the overpaid benefits to the Council.
Cllr Tony Rooth, Lead Councillor for Finance and Resources, says: “It is important that residents tell us immediately if their circumstances change when claiming housing or council tax benefit. The benefits system is in place to help those most in need and we will actively prosecute those people found to be making a fraudulent claim."
