Residents are being invited to get involved in a community-led initiative to tackle climate change and make a difference locally.  Launched by Guildford Borough Council, the Greening Campaign encourages local people to work together and help the community adapt to a changing climate.

Explains Lead Councillor for Environment, Cllr Jenny Wicks: “People across the borough are being invited to ‘green’ their communities and help tackle climate change by getting involved with the Greening Campaign.  We are offering six communities across the borough the chance to run the Greening Campaign. To find out more residents are invited to a meeting at 7pm on Thursday 22 January at the Council offices”.  

The campaign is about engaging and motivating the community to change their behaviour by taking on energy saving measures.  The Greening campaign will also help residents work out how much energy and CO2 emissions their community has saved.

The campaign is the brainchild of Terena Plowright, who started the initiative in her home town of Petersfield to save energy and reduce CO2.  It was so successful that other communities followed suit and it has now spread across the region and beyond.  Terena will be giving a talk and answering questions at the meeting on 22 January.

Funding is available for six groups or communities.  Residents interested in getting involved should come to the meeting in the council chamber at Guildford Borough Council’s Millmead offices at 7pm on 22 January 2009.  For more information visit our climate change pages or contact the Community Climate Change Officer using the details below.
