Help halt heatwave fires and stay safe

20 July 2006

Local people are urged to take extra care as soaring temperatures and dry vegetation increase the chance of undergrowth fires.  There have already been a number of serious fires across the county, including one yesterday just off the A31 Farnham Road leading out of Guildford.

Over 40 firefighters and 16 firefighting appliances from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service tackled the fire, which took hold of four hay fields yesterday afternoon.  The fire was brought under control shortly after 6.30pm and the last crews left the scene at 10.20pm.

In this scorching weather, the council and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service are urging people to minimise the risk of further blazes by following common sense guidelines:

  • Do not light bonfires of any size during the extreme weather, particularly in rural areas
  • Clear away all picnic rubbish, especially glass items
  • Do not throw cigarette ends from car windows
  • Refrain from having barbecues in the open countryside
  • Report fly-tipping to the local authority as soon as possible

Bob Weldon-Gamble, Borough Manager Guildford, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service explains:

“We don’t want to prevent local people from making the most of the hot weather but our top priority is safety.  In high temperatures people should not underestimate how easily fires can start.  By following these simple guidelines we can reduce the risk of further fires and continue to enjoy the countryside during the summer months.  If you have any concerns or if you see a fire you should contact the fire brigade immediately.”

The council is also issuing warnings about the dangers of swimming in natural waters such as rivers, canals, locks and flooded sandpits.

Clifford Bell, Head of Environmental Health Services, explains:

“As temperatures reach all time highs there is a great temptation to cool off in local rivers and lakes.  People should be aware of the high risk of drowning in deep water or strong currents.  Owners of swimming pools should also take extra care to watch out for small children at this time.”
