Young people have been turning industrial waste silicone into fabulous jewellery, lighting and even rugs, thanks to Guildford Borough Council's Recycled by Design project. Howard of Effingham and St Lawrence Primary School students took part in the initiative which aims to raise awareness about waste and recycling.
Cllr Jenny Wicks, Lead Councillor for Environment says: "This is an excellent way for young people to see first-hand how recycled materials can be used to create beautiful and useable new products."
The students attended workshops by young designer Lucy Fergus, who has a passion for industrial materials. Motivated by concerns about disposability and waste, her cutting-edge designs have featured at London’s Covent Garden, the Lightbox in Woking and at Guildford House Gallery. She has an installation at the Lightbox until 20 November 2009.
Lucy Fergus says: "The students have been really inspired by the idea of turning rubbish into something of value and beauty. It’s been really rewarding working with them."
The two schools worked together through the Schools Federation scheme with older students helping younger pupils.
Student Tasha Potts says: "I love the eco-friendly materials and it’s been wonderful to have the freedom to experiment with them."
Head of Art Beverley Roberts adds: "The students really appreciated the opportunity to learn from a working artist. They have been inspired by the idea of using sustainable materials and helping to ensure a greener future."
This initiative is part of Guildford Borough Council's commitment to improving residents’ local surroundings, by focusing on issues that matter most to them such as a cleaner, safer and greener environment.
