Honorary Alderman Sallie Thornberry

10 April 2008

It is with great regret that the council can confirm the sad death of Honorary Alderman Sallie Thornberry.

Honorary Alderman Sallie Thornberry was a long serving councillor, representing Stoke ward for 20 years between 1983 and 2003. She also served as Mayor during the 2000/1 municipal year.

In recognition of her contribution to the borough, Sallie was made an Honorary Alderman in 2003. Sally served on a number of committees over the years with a particular focus on housing.

Cllr Andrew Hodges, Leader of the Council, says: “I first met Sallie Thornberry thirty-five years ago.  She was as polite then, when she told me she voted Labour and Conservative, as she was ever after.  For the twenty years Sallie was a councillor she was popular with all members of Guildford Borough Council, irrespective of party.

Despite being unwell in recent times she always put on a cheerful face.  She was always good company and was greatly respected locally.  I enjoyed the occasional banter with her and willingly acknowledge the contribution she made to Guildford and the residents of Stoke Ward in particular.  She certainly gave more than she received. Sallie really will be sadly missed.”

A one-minute silence will be held in memory of Sallie Thornberry at tonight's (10 April) meeting of the Council.
