The borough of Guildford has appointed six new Honorary Aldermen at a special council meeting held this week. The council approved the titles for four women and two men who provided excellent service during their time as former councillors.
The six Honorary Aldermen are: Tamsy Baker, Gordon Bridger, Keith Childs, Angela Gunning, Jayne Marks and Lynda Strudwick.
Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Mike Nevins comments: "Being selected as an Honorary Alderman reflects the commitment of individuals who have made an outstanding contribution as councillors to both the local community and the council itself. Those selected have served with enthusiasm and dedication over many years as councillors and fully deserve to be recognised for their hard work."
The new appointments bring the total of Honorary Aldermen in Guildford Borough to 20.
Tamsy Baker served a councillor from 1991 until May 2007 for Holy Trinity ward. She was elected Mayor of Guildford in 2005/6 and served on a number of committees including the Executive as Lead Member for Community Development and Chairman of the Licensing and Public Transport Committee.
Gordon Bridger was elected to the council for Holy Trinity ward in 1991 and served as a councillor until 2007. He was elected Mayor of Guildford in 2003/4 and served as Vice-Chairman of the Planning, Audit and Policy and Resources Committees.
Keith Childs was first elected to the borough council in 1991 for Tillingbourne ward and served until May 2007. He was elected Mayor of Guildford in 1998/99 and served on a number of committees including as Chairman of the Housing, Health and Safety Scrutiny Committee.
Angela Gunning was elected in 1995 as councillor for Stoke ward and served until May 2007. She was elected Mayor of Guildford in 2006/7 and served on a number of committees, including as Chairman of the Audit Committee.
Jayne Marks was elected as a councillor for Stoughton ward in 1986 and served until May 2007. She served on a number of committees, including as Chairman of the Housing and Health Committee.
Lynda Strudwick was first elected to the borough council in 1983 for Onslow Ward and served as councillor until May 2007. She was elected as Mayor of Guildford in 1997/8 and served on a number of committees, including the Executive as Lead Member for Leisure.
