Permitted development refers to the permission to carry out certain forms of development without the need to make an application to a local planning authority.
Permitted development and changes to the current system
Since 1 October 2008 some of the biggest changes to permitted development for a generation have been introduced. The aim of the changes is to reduce the number of householder applications received.
Due to these significant changes in the new legislation, we will not be able to respond to letters enquiring as to whether or not planning permission is required. If you wish to obtain a formal determination, you will need to submit an application for a lawful development certificate. This is subject to an application fee. Further advice on this can be found on what types of planning applications are there?. The forms can be found under application forms.
The relevant legislation is The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995 (amended October 2008) (this page opens in a new window).
