The government's Planning Portal website (this page opens in a new window) contains a lot of useful information about planning. It also enables you to submit an online planning application (this page opens in a new window).
If you want to carry out some research before you contact us, we have a number of policy and procedure documents on our publications page that may be relevant and useful.
Our planning policy pages contain information about the policy background to making a planning application against which planning applications are assessed.
The Planning Portal (this page opens in a new window) has a very good glossary of terms which explains many of the technical words, phrases and abbreviations associated with planning development and policy.
You can use the council's maps online facility to find out about your local area. Once you have clicked on maps online, click on 'Themes' on the top tool bar, and then click on 'Local Plan 2003 revised 2007' in the left hand menu. By accessing this Local Plan map, you will be able to find out if, for example, you live in an area designated as a conservation area or an area of outstanding natural beauty.
