The Hospital of the Blessed Trinity, Guildford, known as Abbot's Hospital, is a Jacobean almshouse in the High Street, still in use after four centuries as a home for elderly residents of Guildford.

It was founded in 1619 by George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury in the reign of James I and probably the most notable Guildfordian.  It originally housed 12 single men and 8 single women, but in 1984 a new building was added to upgrade the accommodation and to enable couples to live at the Hospital.  The Common Hall, with furniture from 1622, is still regularly used by residents, as is the beautiful Chapel with its stunning stained glass windows.

Opening times

Visitors can view the Hospital from the entrance arch from 9am to 6pm, or dusk if this is earlier.

Tours normally take place between April and September, at 11am every Saturday and on the first Tuesday of each month (Farmers' Market Days).

Admission

No formal charge is made for visits, but donations are invited. Abbot's Hospital is a charity.

If you come on a tour you are asked to contribute at least £3.50, but there is no charge for accompanied children.

Groups visits

Group tours, normally for between 6-20 people, can be arranged with the Master.  Charges by arrangement, but usually around £5 per person.

Commercial Bookings

The Hospital's Guesten Hall, which can accommodate up to 60 people, can be hired for meetings and other functions by prior arrangement.  Special rates are available for charities.
