Built in 1642 as two cottages, Tanners Hatch was restored from a ruin by YHA members between 1944-46. Upgraded to modern standards in 1988, the hostel still retains its original features, such as open fires, triple bunks and gas lighting, now supplemented with full central heating and electricity. On the National Trust’s Polesden Lacey Estate in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the hostel is located in woodland overlooking a roadless valley.
