Your personal safety

The likelihood of you becoming a victim of crime whilst out and about is actually very low, but you can make yourself even less likely to be a victim:

Transport

  • When waiting for a bus or train stay near people.
  • Sit near the driver of the bus or in a carriage with lots of people on a train if you feel worried.
  • If you use a taxi carry a trusted taxi firm's number with you that you already know.
  • Never use unlicensed taxis hailed from the road.

Out and about

  • Carry some spare money in case of emergencies.
  • Try to spread any valuables around your body. An example of this is keeping your phone in your bag, your wallet in your pocket, and your keys in your jacket.
  • Try not to flash your valuables about!
  • Try to look and act confident - look like you know where you are going and walk tall.
  • When walking or jogging, stay alert and don't listen to music through headphones as you might not hear trouble coming.
  • If you ever need help while out and about try to approach a family rather than a single person.
  • Never leave your drink unattended. If you think it has been touched then leave it and get another one.

Meeting friends

  • Always try to walk with a friend, and make sure that your friends know where you are, and what time you are meeting them.
  • You will be safest in bright, well-lit and busy areas.
  • Arrange how you and your friends will get home before you go out.
  • Make sure your parents know where you are and contact them if your plans change.
