What is the event?
I’m a Councillor is a web event which gets young people and local councillors talking.
Guildford Borough Council, in partnership with Surrey County Council, has signed up 6 local councillors who will compete to be ‘Youth Champion’ for Guildford.
Young people (usually in Citizenship lessons, but also in youth clubs, etc) get to ask the councillors questions, read their manifestos, have live chats, answer quizzes, meet councillors and vote for the councillor they like best. The councillor with the least votes is evicted, in successive rounds, until only one is left.
Teachers are provided with free comprehensive classroom materials, lesson plans, games and information sheets to support the event.
Councillors come away from the event with a real insight into young people’s lives. And young people come away with the feeling for once that people listen to them, that there is some point having opinions and that they can make a difference.
The event brings politics to life for young people, in a way they can relate to, using technology they feel comfortable with.
The event is free and open to all schools and youth groups within Guildford Borough. For more information on the event visit the 'I'm a Councillor' website (this page opens in a new window) and log in as a guest to the site.
