The Local Democracy Week 2008 event in Guildford is all about getting young people and councillors talking!
Background:
Most young people do not view local politics as being important in their daily lives. Research for the Local Government Association by Ipsos MORI shows that only a quarter of 11-16 year olds believe that their local councillor is the best person to go to in order to change something in their community. So how can we change this? By bringing politicians and young people closer together.
Local Democracy Week:
The Local Democracy Campaign is led by the Local Governement Association (LGA). To find out more about the campaign please visit the Local Government Association website (this page opens in a new window).
The Local Democracy Week campaign 2008 aims to:
- Make councils more relevant and useful to young people
- Encourage young people to 'take part, take power'
- Increase councillor involvement in citizenship teaching in schools
- Get councils to devolve power, wherever appropriate, to local people.
Local Democracy Week in Guildford:
2008's Local Democracy Week will take place in the third week of October - from Monday 13 to Sunday 19.
