Discount Schemes

There are a variety of discount schemes that you can sign up to.  Details of some of the schemes are given below.  If you come across any schemes that we haven't listed please let us know by completing the feedback form so that we can add it to the list.

Don't forget that most cinemas, sports centres and other leisure facilities offer discounted rates for children.  In order to take advantage of these you might want to get a PASS card to prove your age.  If you regularly visit the same sports centre you might want to ask them about youth membership which may work out cheaper.

Many cafes also offer loyalty schemes which reward you with free food or drink - if you visit one regularly why not pick up a card from the till?

NUS Associate Card
The NUS Associate card is a specialist discount card available to students who do not have access to students' union membership through their place of study.  Students in Years 12 and 13 at school or Sixth Form College are eligible as are professional students on certain courses.  Visit the nusonline Associate Card FactFile (this page opens in a new window) for more information about eligibility, how to apply for an NUS Associate card.

If your college has a Student Union, you can apply through them for an NUS Extra card which entitles you to discounts both here in the UK and abroad through ISIC (International Student Identity Card).

For more details about the offers you can benefit from and to keep up to date with campaigns visit www.nusonline.co.uk (this page opens in a new window).

UCAS Card
If you are in Year 12 and are considering going to university you can apply for a UCAS card which will get you discounts at a variety of places and will also update you about the courses you are interested in.  For more details visit www.ucas.ac.uk/ucascard (this page opens in a new window).

Young Persons Railcard
If you are aged 16-25 (or 26+ and in full-time education) you can apply for a Young Persons Railcard which entitles you to up 1/3 off your train fares!  The railcard costs £24 a year.  For more information, pick up a leaflet at your local train station or visit www.16-25railcard.co.uk (this page opens in a new window).

Student Fare Card
If you are aged 16-18, in full-time education and use the bus or train to get to school or college, you may be eligible for a Student Fare Card.  This card allows you to pay the child rate for your season tickets (a massive 50% discount!).  If you have a Train Student Fare Card you can also buy singles and returns at the Child rate at weekends and after 4pm weekdays.

For more information about whether you qualify and how to apply please visit the Surrey Student Transport Partnership website (this page opens in a new window).

Council Tax Discount
Depending on your circumstances, you and/or your parents may be entitled to a discount on your council tax.  Please visit the Council Tax pages for more details.

Adult Learning Discount
If you are interested in joining any Adult Learning courses run by Surrey County Council and are aged 16-19 on the first day of your course, you may be entitled to a 50% discount!

For more details about courses, fees and discounts visit the Surrey County Council Adult Learning pages (this page opens in a new window).

Other ways to save money
If you want to save money there are also others things you should bear in mind.  If you are over 16 and work part time you may be paying too much tax on your earnings.  The Student Tax Calculator (this page opens in a new window) will help you work out whether you might be owed money, then ask your employer for the number of your tax office (it may even be on your pay slip) and give them a buzz to get your money back!  For more information about Income Tax , Child Benefits and Tax Credits visit the HM Revenue and Customs website (this page opens in a new window).
