In 1971, my wife and I moved to the village of Send and our two sons were born and brought up there. Since 1983, I have served as one of the two Guildford Borough Councillors for the Send ward.
I have held various positions of responsibility within the borough, including periods as vice-chairman of the Policy & Resources Committee and chairman of the Finance Sub-Committee within the previous council structure. I was also privileged to serve as Mayor of Guildford for the 2004/5 civic year and have served on the Council's Executive.

Throughout my time as a councillor, I have served on the Planning Committee, of which I am now Chairman. In this capacity, I have always done my best to preserve and enhance the character of Send and also of the Guildford town centre and the other villages within the borough. I am also a members of the Licensing Committee.
When I was elected as Mayor, I retired from full-time employment. I had previously held executive or management positions with various high technology companies, mainly in the computer systems field. I have always used my business experience to try to ensure that the council delivers services in an efficient and cost-effective way. I have similarly used my computer systems background to try to ensure that the council is making appropriate use of computers and telecommunications to improve services and reduce costs. In this connection, I have, for many years, served on the council's e-Government Working Group.
I am one of the council's representatives on the court of the University of Surrey and on the Executive of the Guildford-Freiburg Association. I am also a Governor of St Bede's Church of England (Aided) Junior School in Send. As far as my council duties allow, I take part in a wide range of leisure activities, particularly in the areas of history and culture.
