Garden waste collection renewals
We have identified an administrative error on some letters we have sent out for garden waste collection renewals. We would like to confirm that the correct payment for this year is £15 for two bags, £30 for three bags and £45 for four bags. If you are paying online, by phone or by cheque, please pay these amounts.
For those customers with an error in their letter, please accept our apologies for any confusion.
Some residents will be issued with a purple plastic sack for their recycling, instead of a purple box and green box. The same waste can be recycled in the purple plastic sack as would be collected in the purple and green box.
Paper
Newspapers and magazines, directories, card, catalogues, junk mail, envelopes, Christmas cards and gift wrap (paper only), office and printed papers can all be recycled in your purple plastic sack. There is no need to remove staples or windows from envelopes. Please do not put liquid food drinks cartons (sometimes referred to as Tetrapaks) in your purple sack. These contain layers of plastics and sometimes foil that are unwanted by our paper merchants. There are banks for liquid food cartons at one of our fivebring bank sites.
Paper makes up nearly 30% of our household waste so please recycle as much of it as possible.
Cardboard
Please tear and flatten cardboard so that it will fit within your purple sack.
Shredded paper
Many residents shred some paper to protect themselves from identity fraud. Shredded paper is excellent material to add to your compost heap as it will rot down and provide a useful source of carbon to your composting mix. If you prefer to recycle it please put it all in your purple sack.
Glass bottles and jars
All glass bottles and jars can go in the purple sack. No plate glass, light bulbs or broken glass of any kind please.
Cans, tins and aerosols
Please rinse out cans and tins. Make sure that aerosols are completely empty. Do not attempt to squash or pierce them.
Plastic bottles
Please remember we can only recycle plastic bottles. Currently, there are extremely limited markets for other types of plastics and most sorting machinery in the UK is designed to sort bottles only. We hope that technology will improve in the future so that we will be able to collect other types but for now it's bottles only please. Any type of bottle can be recycled including those used for milk, water, fizzy drinks, shampoo, washing up liquid, detergents and so on. If it is bottle shaped it can go in the green box.
The purple sack needs to be set out at the kerbside in a clearly visible location by 7am on your collection day.
Plastic household battery bag
We have provided you with small bags that, once full, can be sealed and left alongside your purple plastic sack.
Batteries suitable for recycling include AA, AAA, square and button batteries that are either single use or rechargeable. Please ensure that the batteries are fully "spent" by testing them in a torch or other relevant product. It is also important to make sure that the bag is properly sealed. Please do not put them in your purple sack. Car batteries should be taken to your local bring bank sites.
