Now booking: Pastfinders pottery workshop for 12-16 years olds

19 November and 10 December 2011: Be part of an exhibition! Make your own clay pot to be displayed in an exhibition at Guildford Museum...

For centuries Surrey has been an important area producing ceramic items. Join this Pastfinders workshop for young people aged 12-16 years, to create your own pot and display it in our exhibition 'From this Earth' which celebrates Surrey's place in ceramics history.

Join Lucy Burley, a leading local contemporary artist, and Tracey Mardles, our Education Officer, to see how museums and artists work together to create displays inspired by the past.

In the first session with Lucy you will investigate the fascinating ways that a simple substance - clay - has been used throughout history to make everyday and special objects and learn some fun and exciting pottery techniques, and make your own pots inspired by the work you've seen in the ''From this Earth'' exhibition. The pots will be taken away and fired - you can choose your glaze colours - and returned for you to display in a second session and become part of the 'From this Earth' exhibition.

All materials for the sessions will be provided, refreshments will be provided and there will be a short break for lunch. Please bring a packed lunch with you and dress for the mess!

This is what you will do:

  • View the exhibition & make some pots - on Saturday 19 November 10am - 3.30pm with Lucy Burley and Tracey Mardles, our Education Officer. Explore the exhibition of contemporary ceramics 'From this Earth' on display at Guildford House Gallery. Inspired by what you have seen express yourself in clay. We will fire the pieces you make for you so that they can be displayed as a part of 'From this Earth'.
  • Tell the world about your pot! Visitors love to know about the objects on display so you will create some text to describe your pot.
  • Display your work - on Saturday 10 December, 10am - 12.30pm with Tracey Mardles, the Education Officer, working together as a team to create a display of your work at Guildford Museum.

Participants will need to be aged between 12-16 years of age at the start of the first session and commit to attending both sessions and producing the labels for their pots. Refreshments will be served at both sessions.

Cost: £30 per young person for the 2 sessions, to be paid in advance (fee will include the cost of the clay, glazes and firings).

Venue: 19 November - Brew House at Guildford House Gallery

            10 December - Guildford Museum
