If you are an early stage technology or knowledge-based business, there are two local organisations, listed below, who provide support for entrepreneurs to commercialise their ideas and intellectual property. Self-employment and VATYou will need to register as self-employed with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). If you expect your business turnover to be more than £73,000 a year you will also need to register for VAT. For VAT and national insurance queries go to the HMRC website or call 0845 010 9000. Citizens Advice Bureau provides help on becoming self-employed. It is also recommended that professional advice is sought from an accountant or bank at an early stage. Planning permission, licenses and business ratesDepending on the type of business you are starting you may need permits or planning permission from Guildford Borough Council and may have to pay business rates.
