The HouseFrom 21 April 2011 we celebrate Guildford House - an iconic building. Most people miss Guildford House when they walk past it in the High Street, but it is an important building that has a fascinating story to tell.
Full of many original architectural features, Guildford House was originally built in 1660 and owned by John Childe, a wealthy lawyer, and his wife. By the 18th and 19th centuries it was the home of the Martyr family, and was later used as a series of businesses in the 19th century and a shop and restaurant in the 20th century. In 1959 it took on its present role as the Guildford Borough Art Gallery, and a venue to a programme of varied temporary exhibitions, and in 2011 we welcomed the Tourist Information Centre as an addition to the building. The House will offer a programme of events and activities designed to celebrate and interpret this iconic 17th century building which has been a feature of Guildford's High Street during five centuries. Also on display will be a selection of portraits by John Russell, and images of Guildford House. Come on a free tour of Guildford House Gallery, one of Guildford's hidden treasures!
