Retrospective exhibition of the paintings of Jessie MahtaniSaturday 10 March - Saturday 24 March: Guildford House Gallery welcomes Jessie Mahtani with an exhibition of oil paintings to go on show in the first floor galleriesJessie studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in the 60s, and at the Ecole des Beaux Art in Paris on a French Government Scholarship, before teaching at Liverpool College of Art. Spending a great deal of time on each work means that Jessie must choose her subjects carefully. Often spending one or two years on one piece of artwork, Jessie constantly changes and adjusts her work and waits for the seasons to come and go until the same light and time of year comes back around so she can finish what she started. Choosing the medium of oil paint allows for this to be done with ease. Jessie hopes that some of the results will communicate with an audience in this purely visual way. Jessie says: "I have been lucky to have a loft studio, halfway up a hill - this explains my tendency to paint my rooftop subjects. The views across the rooftops lead as far as Redhill and even towards the North Downs. At such a level, this scene is a different world to the familiar unseen roads below." Jessie's work will be on display in the first floor galleries until Saturday 24 March 2012. |
