Guildford Job Club and networking group

Guildford Job Club and Networking Group is held in the ground floor meeting room at St Saviour's Church Centre in Woodbridge Road, Guildford (next to Jobcentre Plus - 100m from the Friary Bus Station). It meets every Monday morning from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Helping local unemployed people move on into new jobs, self employment and also offering a range of practical help in a supportive club setting. The club includes the basics of CV writing, interview skills and job search techniques.

Please let Chris Stanton know if any job search topics you'd like to cover in greater depth and/or if you would like to attend a practice interview with a local business manager.

Dates and topics

Monday 9 January: The overall process of getting a job; key success factors; most likely/least likely ways of getting a job; making the most of my opportunities.  Do I need to change career?  How to develop more options.  Do I need further training and where can I find out about it?

Monday 16 January: Member-led session

Monday 23 January: Preparing for the job search; making the most of what I have to offer; knowing my unique talents, achievements and skills.

Monday 30 January: Member-led session

Monday 6 February: Writing or improving my CV; different formats; covering letters; CV clinic.

Monday 13 February: Member-led session

Monday 20 February: Networking to research the job market; including social media; speculative letters.  Small group discussions on things that work for me and things that I am finding difficult.

Monday 27 February: Member-led session

Monday 5 March: Overcoming practical barriers e.g. finding my way through the recruitment consultancy maze; completing the difficult bits of the application form; what IT skills do I need to develop?  Overcoming personal barriers e.g. loss of self confidence; self limiting beliefs; concern about my age or qualifications.

Monday 12 March: Member-led session

Monday 19 March: How to prepare for interviews; how to answer `awkward questions'.  How to give a presentation at an interview or to a potential client.

Monday 26 March: Member-led session

Monday 2 April: Open forum.  Where am I in the job search process?  What are my next steps?  What, if any, are my blockers?  How might other Job Club members support me?  Is self employment for me?
