Roll of HonourThe Guildford Roll of Honour is a new annual award which recognises and celebrates people who have made a real difference to Guildford and the surrounding area, either economically, socially or artistically, and who are outstanding in their field of work. The initiative is a joint venture between the Council and the University of Surrey to celebrate Guildford's links to world leading innovation and business success. The Roll of Honour was launched for the first time on Thursday 30 June 2011 at a celebratory black tie event with guests from the worlds of business, education and the public service. The ceremony took place in the historic Guildhall in the High Street and it is here that the roll will be permanently displayed. Cllr Tony Rooth, Leader of the Council, comments: "Guildford has a long history as a centre of trade, commerce and innovation. We are proud to be associated with this new award, which recognises the impact of exceptional individuals to the wealth, well being and culture of the area. Roll of Honour recipients will also play an important ambassadorial role highlighting the successes and achievements associated with the borough." The first recipient of the award is Professor Sir Martin Sweeting, Executive Chairman of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL). Professor Sweeting has won both national and international acclaim for his work spanning three decades in the development and manufacture of a new generation of highly reliable and cost effective space satellites. Professor Sweeting has been nominated in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the economy and profile of Guildford worldwide. |
