About

An award-winning, beautiful 18th century landscape garden in the heart of Surrey, Painshill offers an 158 acre wonderland that has something for everyone. The perfect family day out, discover the mystical follies, historic plantings, the John Bartram Heritage Collection of North American trees and shrubs (Plant Heritage, NCCPG), and some of Surrey’s amazing wildlife.

A Grade 1 listed 18th century garden, Painshill was created in the naturalistic style between 1738 and 1773, and was the artistic vision of the Honourable Charles Hamilton, 9th son and 14th child of the 6th Earl of Abercorn. Inspired by Hamilton’s Grand Tour across Europe in the 1700’s, each of the magical follies has been restored as per Hamilton’s original vision. From the award-winning crystal Grotto* to the Gothic Temple and Ruined Abbey, each of the beautifully unique follies, is set to ignite the imagination. Other key features and follies include the Turkish Tent, Gothic Tower as well as the restored Waterwheel, a quaint Hermitage hidden in the woods and the Painshill Vineyard.

You can spend a whole day at Painshill or there are shorter accessible routes around the Serpentine Lake. Bring a picnic or visit Hamilton’s Tea Room for some delicious treats and refreshments, and don’t forget to visit the Painshill Shop to view an extensive range of gifts, souvenirs, decorations and even Painshill’s very own Sparkling Wine.
