Westborough Works 2011

The Guildford Local Strategic Partnership for Westborough in 2020 is that it will be a safe, clean and attractive place to live.

Key elements in delivering this vision are community pride, confidence and unity. We, together with our partners, wish to encourage and support the residents of Westborough ward to get involved in decisions, and identify priorities for change in the area.

£20,000 has been made available to spend in 2011 on environmental improvements within the ward and we identified six key improvement types which can make a difference to the neighbourhood. Costings were provided for different works to show how far the money will go initially, but we recognise that we can deliver far more long-term benefits to the local environment by working with the local community.

You can view the pdf icon information sheets online [1Mb] which were provided at these events.

We asked local residents to tell us what they wished to see, and set priorities for works at a series of events on 11-13 January 2011. Choosing from a range of suggested environmental improvement types, or providing other ideas, local residents created three maps of coloured dots. In addition offers of help, interest, and support were also provided.

We have combined the results and you can view them on an interactive map layer called Westborough Woods EI Plan. Alternatively you can pdf icon download a copy of the map [3Mb].

The works project team has been analysing these results and prioritised them through the set of criteria listed below. This action plan is now available to view and as more information and ideas about implementing the requests continue to develop we have also circulated to local residents several pdf icon illustrative project sheets [1Mb] for discussion.

  • high residential or community interest - either in a particular space or type of work
  • state of existing environment - poorer quality, more urgent
  • a community support group identified or possible to help install and support the improvement
  • the site is available for example land owner agrees
  • there will be additional future benefits in carrying out the improvement such as multiple use of a space
  • works located where they could be part of a bigger improvement project
  • a place not overly vulnerable to vandalism ie good surveillance, location precludes physical contact
  • high visibility for example main road or local centre where high level of local community go
  • possibility of other funding/projects delivering improvement.

As we have been working more information and ideas are continuing to develop for the project as a whole and we have provided a pdf icon summary [4Mb] to view of how the six different improvement types will be implemented, both at this stage of the project, and further ideas for the future.

We welcome your comments and consultation on the first improvements will end mid May.

Then, with your help, we are looking forward to getting the first works started. More information will be posted here shortly.
