Town and gown join to celebrate Guildford Roll of Honour
The fifth annual Guildford Roll of Honour ceremony, an award presented by the University of Surrey Guildford Borough Council to recognise individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the local area, took place recently at the Guildhall.
The Guildford Roll of Honour award is usually presented to an individual who has made a significant impact to the economic wealth, social wellbeing or artistic culture of Guildford and the surrounding areas.
This year, instead of selecting a new candidate, the ceremony honoured previous recipients of the award and served as an opportunity to reflect on the successes of the last five years.
Local businesses were also invited to sign up to a new Guildford Corporate Citizenship charter to demonstrate their support and commitment to making a positive contribution to the local community.
Attendants included the Mayor of Guildford, the Managing Director and Leader of Guildford Borough Council, Vice-Chancellor Professor Max Lu, and previous winners Professor Sir Martin Sweeting, Executive Chair of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, and Peter Molyneux OBE, internationally-renowned entrepreneur, computer games developer and programmer.
Keith Robson, Chief Operating Officer of the 5G Innovation Centre, said: "This is a tremendously exciting time for Guildford and the surrounding areas. It is a hub for many emerging technology-driven sectors such as the digital economy, space, health and the creative industries and it is a privilege to both celebrate these achievements and to look forward to future exciting developments in these and other sectors in and around Guildford."
Sue Sturgeon, Managing Director of Guildford Borough Council, said: "Businesses make a huge contribution to the success of Guildford. We have launched the Corporate Citizenship Charter to celebrate and promote the positive influence that businesses have on the quality of life and prosperity of our borough. The charter asks businesses to commit to working with us to meet the challenges ahead and to make Guildford an even better place to live and work."
