Guildford celebrates sporting achievements
Wednesday 1 March saw our local Olympians, Paralympians and Invictus Games competitors sharing their successes with Guildford's first group of Specsavers Surrey Youth Games Young Ambassadors.
Olympian and Paralympian athletes from Guildford, including Anne Usher (née Dickins), Amy Wilson-Hardy, and George Nash - who competed in the Rio 2016 games, took part in a presentation ceremony celebrating their achievements, and shared their experiences with a Q&A session. A special interview with Guildford's own Invictus Games competitor, Andrew Kelsey, also took place.
Cllr Iseult Roche, Lead for Community, Health and Sport, said "It's exciting to know that Guildford produces such outstanding talent, and that we're even represented on the world stage. Last night was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate sporting achievement in our borough - and for our local Surrey Youth Games Ambassadors to mix with outstanding elite athletes from Guildford. This is why it's so important to encourage everyone to take part in sports and have the opportunity to reach their own personal potential. I wish our local youth all the best success at this year's Surrey Youth Games!"
25 local Specsavers Surrey Youth Games Young Ambassadors who competed for Team Guildford in the 2015 Surrey Youth Games, also attended to celebrate their new role.
The Specsavers Surrey Youth Games Young Ambassadors, from 10 local primary schools and five local secondary schools, enjoyed meeting and greeting the Olympic and Invictus Games athletes, and sharing personal accounts from their sporting achievements.
The Specsavers Surrey Youth Games competition weekend takes place on 17 and 18 June 2017.
