The Village Guildford: launch weekend 10 - 11 June

Saturday 10 June sees the start of the exciting events programme for The Village Guildford, the unique vibrant event space located in the heart of the town. The Village is located close to the Friary Centre, between Commercial Road and Woodbridge Road.

Activities start at 10:30am from the High Street Guildhall with a parade featuring a giant puppet called 'Eartha' Queen of the earth, characters from 'Alice through the Looking Glass', the Eagle Radio Love Crew with Egbert the Eagle, characters from 'The Wizard of Oz' (the forthcoming production at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre) and dancers from 'Rhythmic Collision'. The street parade will then make its way from the Guildhall in the High Street before arriving at The Village for 11am.

Our media partner, Eagle Radio, will be broadcasting from The Village between 10am and 2pm on Saturday.

As we move into the evening, expect funky beats and uplifting vibes from Kane FM's House of Dice who will be playing electronic music from 7:30 to 9:30pm.

Free fun activities for all the family

Over the weekend there will be fun-packed free entertainment, make and take sessions, aeroball, free prize draws, face painting, giveaways and lots more.

The Village Guildford features a stage area, an open public space and seating. A mix of food concessions serving a tempting array of street food, retail outlets and a licensed bar will also be available for people to enjoy.

Each week there will be themed events and activities. From food festivals, to film nights, live music, a live big screen showing summer sporting events, a car show, community and arts events, as well as day time activities for all the family. There is something that appeals to a wide audience, and The Village also has free WiFi for visitors to use.

Cllr David Bilbe,  Lead Councillor for Economic Development and Tourism, says: "Saturday will see the culmination of a great team effort between ourselves and our partners to get The Village ready for our residents and visitors to enjoy. We have put in place an exciting events programme which runs from now, right the way through to the end of the year. We listened to the views and ideas that came from our first opening and have taken appropriate steps to address the concerns that people had and also to act upon the ideas that were put forward."

Peter Gordon, Content Director, Eagle Radio says: "Eagle Radio is delighted to have been asked to help promote the launch of The Village - it's so important that a town like Guildford keeps its mind open to progressive ideas, especially when they are aimed at generating a feeling of community. We feel that people should give The Village a real chance of helping towards generating that feeling. We're looking forward to being there for the launch!"

Nick White, Head of Youth and Education at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre says: "We are delighted to have been asked by Guildford Borough Council to perform at the launch of the events programme of The Village. The Yvonne Arnaud Youth Theatre's summer production, The Wizard of Oz, is following the yellow brick road to Guildford's very own 'Emerald City.' Join us on Sunday at 11am, 1pm and 3.30pm to meet cast members and watch performances from our upcoming, main stage production."
