Final legal challenge to Local Plan dismissed

Leader of the Council, Councillor Caroline Reeves said: "I am delighted to confirm that all legal challenges to the adoption of Guildford's Local Plan: Strategy and Sites have been dismissed by the High Court and Court of Appeal.

"The final Court of Appeal judgement marks the end of a prolonged period of uncertainty for developers and our residents. We can now look forward and begin to implement the plan to provide much-needed sustainable development to meet the needs of our borough's current and future residents and businesses."

Lead Councillor for Planning, Councillor Jan Harwood explained: "The Inspector's conclusions have been found to be justified and robust. The task before us now is to ensure that development meets the highest standards of sustainable design and contributes towards our commitment to addressing the climate change emergency. We are preparing additional detailed planning policy and supplementary planning guidance which focuses specifically on the issues related to climate change, sustainable design, construction and energy."

He added: "We will be consulting with residents and businesses and welcome views on these documents over the coming months. While we understand that this outcome may not represent what many will have hoped for, we are committed to delivering the growth that Guildford needs."
