This summer take a trip through time to Guildford's historic streets. Visit our online exhibition of our borough's photographic collection: Guildford Streets and watch our fascinating YouTube conversations exploring changes and developments that happened in our borough, or pop into Guildford Museum to see a selection of black and white prints from our collection - some taken more than 100 years ago.

Guildford Museum. Guildford Borough Council

Visit our online exhibition of our borough's photographic collection: Guildford Streets and watch our fascinating YouTube conversations exploring changes and developments that happened in our borough, or pop into Guildford Museum to see a selection of black and white prints from our collection - some taken more than 100 years ago.

Guildford Museum, next to Guildford Castle grounds in Quarry Street, has a large photography collection dating from the late 1800s.The photographs show buildings and streets, as well as people going about their daily lives. These  images  of the heart of the town, capture people looking directly at the camera, while  some are completely unaware of being photographed. Discover the High Street full of horse-drawn vehicles and livestock markets, and see North Street quiet and calm, a contrast to today's hustle and bustle.

Cllr John Redpath, Lead Councillor for Economy and Regeneration, said:

"Our photographic collection is an amazing recording of our borough's history. Guildford Streets exhibition is the result of an ongoing project to digitise our collection and put it online to make it more accessible to the public. I hope you enjoy it, or perhaps visit some of the collection in the museum or watch one of the online talks and discover more on Guildford's heritage."

Three online talks each focus on a different area of the town: High Street, North Street and Quarry Street. Some of our Guildfordians may recognise images from the 1960s and 1970s. Watch our first YouTube talk 'The High Street: David Rose, local historian in conversation with our Access Officer Melanie Holliker'. The next two episodes will be shared over the coming weeks on our social media channels.

Visitors to the museum can pick up a free copy of Guildford Streets Family Fun to take a closer look at the photographs on display.
