50+ sports opportunities

See what's on offer in the borough for anyone aged 50 plus to get fitter and feel healthier.

Do you want to feel fitter and healthier, get out and meet new people? Get Active 50+ for longer, healthier, happier lives has been launched to help you do just this.

Across the county, there are sports and physical activities offered at hugely reduced prices to inspire residents aged 50 plus to try something new to improve their health and wellbeing.

Badminton, bowls, exercise and dance classes, golf, inclusive multi sports, jogging, swimming and walking football are all on offer. Have a look at the Active Surrey Activity Finder to search for activities in our area.

Sports opportunities

We have a range of subsisted sessions and sports that are a great way to keep healthy and active whilst enjoying staying fit and meeting new people.

Badminton

Bowls

Try your hand at this popular, low-impact sport and get fit while having fun! Find out more information about Bowls Clubs across the borough on the Get Active 50+ bowls page of the Active Surrey website.

Jogging

Run Active Guildford offers beginners' jogging courses from £10 per person.

A new beginners jogging course starts on Monday 4th September from the Ash Centre, Ash Hill Road.

Dance and exercise

This offer includes yoga, Pilates, tai chi, Zumba and many more exercise options at the Guildford Adult Learning Centre. Eligible learners can receive £40 off selected dance and exercise classes. Walking Basketball

If you enjoyed playing basketball in the past but injuries or fitness levels have stopped you, this is the offer for you! Walking basketball is low impact, great cardio exercise and a lot of fun too. Swimming

Guildford Spectrum is offering low cost swimming lessons for over 50's. Join the small group sessions to improve water confidence and health for only £8 for 8 sessions. Available until mid-December 2017. See further details about icon swimming lessons [1.98MB] .

Get active - every little helps

Leading a healthier, more active lifestyle doesn't necessarily mean running a marathon or going to the gym - it could be brisk walking, dancing the foxtrot or bowls. Raising your heart rate for 30 minutes, several times a week, can lead to both physical and mental health benefits, and can help manage many conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, joint problems and obesity, as well as lower the risk of other diseases such as Alzheimer's and depression.

Get Active 50+

Get active 50+, delivered by Active Surrey, is funded by Sport England, the Borough and District Councils and Surrey County Council Public Health exclusively for people aged 50 or over. It aims to improve health amongst older adults across Surrey, where one in four adults are deemed to be inactive and 40% are not meeting the Chief Medical Officer's (CMO) guideline of 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise.
